TL;DR
Cursor is an IDE that got an AI grafted into it. Claude Code is an AI agent that happens to run in a terminal. They solve different problems. If your team is mostly doing line-level autocomplete, inline refactors, and quick "add a button here" edits inside VS Code, Cursor is the better fit. If you're doing agentic work — multi-file changes, parallel subagents, hooks that enforce invariants, skills that capture team know-how — Claude Code wins by a wide margin.
This isn't vendor-bashing. I use Cursor too. This is what I actually tell clients when they ask "which one?"
What each tool actually is
Cursor is a fork of VS Code with AI integrated at the IDE level. You get Tab autocomplete, inline chat, Composer for multi-file edits, and Agent mode that runs a more autonomous loop. The default experience is an IDE that predicts your next character and writes small blocks when you ask.
Claude Code is a CLI. You run it in a terminal inside your repo. It reads your codebase, uses tools (file reads, bash, edits), and works on tasks in a loop. There's no IDE. The terminal is the interface. You can hook it into VS Code via the official extension, but the primary surface is still the CLI.
The framing matters. Cursor optimizes for "the moment you type." Claude Code optimizes for "the task you started."
Where Cursor wins
Inline flow. Tab completion is still Cursor's killer feature. It predicts the next 1–30 characters with an accuracy that makes me feel slow without it. No tool, no prompt, no ceremony — just type and accept.
Visual diff UX. The Composer diff panel is genuinely good. You review multi-file edits in a rich UI with per-chunk accept/reject. Claude Code's terminal diffs work but don't compare visually.
Onboarding. "Download Cursor, sign in, start typing" beats "install CLI, configure API key, learn commands." A junior dev gets value out of Cursor on day one. Claude Code has a steeper first-hour curve.
Lower ceremony for small changes. "Rename this variable across the file," "extract this block into a function," "add a loading state to this component" — these are Cursor-native and quick. Running Claude Code for them is overkill.
Where Claude Code wins
Agentic workflow. Claude Code is built for "go do this task, come back when done." Planning, executing, iterating, self-reviewing — it runs for five, ten, thirty minutes on something meaningful. Cursor's Agent mode is getting better, but the gap is real: Claude Code treats autonomy as the main case, not a feature.
Hooks. Claude Code hooks are the single reason I recommend it to production teams. PreToolUse, PostToolUse, Notification — system-enforced guardrails the agent cannot bypass. Cursor's rules system is a prompt-level mechanism; the model can drift from it. Hooks shift enforcement from "model compliance" to "system invariant."
Skills. Reusable capabilities in the repo, shared by the team, composable by subagents. The closest analog in Cursor is .cursor/rules/, which is good but less structured and not designed for chaining. My Skillsmith tool exists specifically to keep skills portable across both.
Subagents and worktrees. Claude Code spawns subagents with isolated contexts and has first-class support for git worktrees. Three parallel tasks running in three isolated branches, no interference. Cursor doesn't have an equivalent primitive.
CI and automation. Because Claude Code is a CLI, it slots into CI, Docker containers, remote servers, cron jobs. Cursor is an IDE — it's not designed to run unattended.
Model flexibility. Claude Code naturally tracks Anthropic's best model releases and lets you switch between Sonnet/Opus/Haiku per-task. Cursor supports multiple providers but is most polished on its own routing.
Cost — the part nobody writes about honestly
Cursor is $20/month (Pro) or $40/month (Business). Predictable. Includes generous completion usage and a rate-limited chat.
Claude Code billing is API-level through your Anthropic account (or Claude Pro/Max subscriptions where supported). For teams doing serious agentic work — multiple long-running tasks a day — this can run $50–300/dev/month depending on model choice and context usage.
Cursor is cheaper for broad rollouts. Claude Code is cheaper per unit of completed work when the work is non-trivial, because one ten-minute agentic task often replaces an hour of human time a small completion can't.
My actual recommendation: most teams should use both. Cursor for flow, Claude Code for tasks. The $20/month Cursor seat stays, you add Claude Code on top, and you stop treating "which AI IDE?" as a single-winner decision.
When to pick which
Pick Cursor if:
- Your team is mostly writing UI tweaks, small features, individual bug fixes
- You want a single subscription and predictable billing
- Onboarding speed for juniors matters more than advanced workflow
- You're in a VS Code shop and the friction of adopting a CLI is real
Pick Claude Code if:
- You're doing multi-step tasks where "the agent works while I do something else" is the point
- You need production guardrails (hooks) you can enforce at repo level
- Your team shares skills and wants them version-controlled
- You're running agents in CI, on servers, or in any non-interactive environment
Use both if:
- You have the budget and the team is senior enough to know which mode fits which task
- You're building a workflow that starts in Cursor (scaffold a component) and moves to Claude Code (implement the backend, wire the data layer, write the tests)
What this looks like day to day
My own setup: Cursor open in VS Code for reading code and small edits. Claude Code in a separate terminal for anything that touches more than two files or needs to run longer than thirty seconds. A CLAUDE.md at the repo root, hooks in .claude/, skills shared across both tools via Skillsmith.
The mistake I see teams make: committing to one and treating it as a religion. Cursor users dismiss Claude Code as "just another terminal tool." Claude Code users dismiss Cursor as "autocomplete with extra steps." Both miss the point — these tools optimize for different moments, and a real workflow uses both.
What your AI workflow really needs
Tool choice is less important than workflow choice. CLAUDE.md (or .cursor/rules/), enforced conventions (hooks or equivalent), shared capabilities (skills or equivalent), and discipline around context and review — this is what makes AI tooling deliver. If your team doesn't have those, the tool doesn't matter; you'll struggle with either.
